Here is a list of some of the more common types of yarns together with their uses:-
- Cotton is one of the commonest fibres in everyday use. Due to its softness, comfort and durability it is readily found in a wide variety of clothes such as suits, jeans, shirts, t-shirts, socks and underwear to name but a few. It is also present in household goods such as table-cloths, towels and sheets. It is commonly mixed with a synthetic fibre to make routine chores such as washing and ironing easier.
- Wool rates alongside cotton but has different properties and is very popular in the UK due to its excellent warming capacity!! It is consequently found in items such as coats, suits, sweaters, scarves, gloves and socks. It has natural elasticity, bulk and is very absorbent; and an added bonus for the male population - there is no ironing involved in order to make it wearable!! Wool also may be mixed with another fibre to prolong its life.
- Silk has more limited uses but that is not say it is not popular. On the contrary, because it can be expensive it is therefore considered a luxury, and so is generally kept for special occasions. Women will wear silk blouses when attending formal gatherings and a silk negligee may be the choice when trying to impress a member of the opposite sex. A man will wear a silk tie and may own silk underwear. Silk is also used in some upholstery, wall decorations and window adornments.
